    Biography

    Mahin Qudeer Sheikh, MBBS, FICS (Jr.), is our Postdoctoral Research Scholar. He was born in Boston and raised between the United States and Pakistan – an upbringing that shaped both his global perspective and his commitment to cross-cultural medicine. Mahin completed his medical degree at Ameer-ud-Din Medical College, Lahore, in 2026, complemented by an Associate bachelor's degree in English literature in 2024 from the University of the Punjab, reflecting an intellectual range that extends well beyond the clinical sciences.

    Mahin’s research training has been equally rigorous. In 2025, he completed the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, grounding him in the methodological foundations of clinical research. He subsequently served as a Research Assistant from 2025 to 2026 at the Surgical Technologies Advancing Trauma (STAT) Lab at Duke University School of Medicine, a translational research laboratory focused on advancing scientific approaches for the care of traumatically injured patients. That same year, through his collaborative work with US-based attending surgeons and on their recommendation, Mahin was awarded the title of FICS (Jr.) by the International College of Surgeons, US Section.

    Mahin's clinical interests span cardiac surgery, heart and lung transplantation, and the care of critically ill patients. His research, conducted under the supervision of his Principal Investigator, Jasleen Kukreja, MD, is directed at expanding the donor pool so that more lungs can be utilized for transplantation β€” evaluating and rehabilitating organs that would be declined under current criteria, and identifying which of them can be used safely. He works across the program's four domains: clinical trials, basic science, translational science, and ex vivo lung perfusion. He also conducts observational research studies, drawing on both prospective and retrospective donor and recipient data to examine outcomes after lung transplantation.

    Alongside this, Mahin is also delving into AI and machine learning approaches to improve outcomes in lung transplant surgery, building tools that support organ acceptance decisions and anticipate early graft dysfunction in a form clinicians can interpret and trust at the bedside. His work in surgical innovation addresses the operational side of transplantation, developing secure digital tools that allow procurement surgeons, transplant surgeons, coordinators, and organ procurement organizations to share clinical information, imaging, and real-time assessment of donor organs across institutions. Outside of medicine, he enjoys hiking along coastal trails and nature paths, and playing cricket in his free time.
